A community garden on Peverel Road

I am submitting this application as the local County Councillor for Abbey. Several residents on the Peverel estate asked if the green space between numbers 40-60 Peverel Road could be improved.

The green space currently has almost no grass left. It is full of puddles and mud in rainy months as well.

In particular, there are concerns about the very large, beautiful tree in the middle of this green space. Due to driving over to park near the houses on the close, the tree roots are being damaged.

On the Verge and ward City Councillors are also supportive of improvements in this area. We think larger improvements are needed: such as separating the green space with a fence, so that residents who have to park at the end can drive towards the space in an orderly way without affecting the tree roots and the grass area.

However, as a smaller, low-cost improvement, I propose testing a small community garden around the large tree area, focussed on working with plants that are easy to take care of and can be used by residents - like lavender, chamomile, mint or other low-maintenance edible plans. It could be in the shape of planters around the tree. As the allotments are a few steps away from this site, this could be a good collaboration with the allotments users as well as On the Verge Cambridge.
