Arbury Court

From "Phase 1: Understanding your neighbourhood and establishing a vision (map)"

Go to the project

I really want to say something positive about Arbury Court, but I'm really struggling to. Despite the investment in the area just a few years ago this is such as grey, depressing a d unwelcoming area. All of the shops are set back so look dark and uninviting. Many of the shops close early and are only open for limited amounts of time at the weekend, so when I can go there all I see is shops with their shutters down. Perhaps it's very vibrant on a Monday lunchtime, but whenever I go there it's dead apart from a few people going to Budgens (which is much worse than it was before its makeover). It's so much more appealing to jump in the car than it is to go there and I really don't want to feel like that. I want to support the local shops but I find fewer and fewer reasons to go there, plus opening times don't fit in my schedule.

The whole area is now 65 years old and I think we have to question whether it is still working as well as it should - back in the day it would have been a bustling area during the week as there were a lot more stay at home mums doing the shopping during the week. That just isn't life now. The generation that first moved to the area in the early 60s (including my family) are almost gone.

I've been searching for examples of similar shopping precincts that have been renovated and modernised, but all I'm finding is that similar precincts (in Chorlton, Edinburgh, Coventry, etc.) have been knocked down and rebuilt.

I agree. The area is dated and feels forgotten. It feels as though we are treated like second class citizens and not given the investment to enable a vibrant community. Cafe, an actual open Pharmacy, benches, food trucks etc would make the place feel more current. Also more planters and greenery. Budgens although useful is also very expensive so the most disadvantaged end up paying more for food.

@Anna Ghale Agree, and it’s important that this shopping area needs to thrive, not fall into neglect. There is so little retail in this area, so few areas to shop in a communal space, we need to hang onto to it and support it. Budgens is expensive but so useful. The Post Office inside is a vital part of the court too. I think a cafe, a place where people can stop and chat, would make a huge difference.

@Chloe Thomas The Post Office is one of the greatest things in the area - it's such a shame that they're now shoved in a tiny, dark corner. Some of the ladies who work there have been there 30-40 years (having previously worked in the post office inside the hardware shop when that was in Arbury Court). They're total local heroes who always have time to chat, help people, etc.
