Thank you for your project application idea, the project concept would contribute towards improving the local environment. This project was taken to the North Area Committee 13/11/2023 for consideration within the funding and criteria for EIP area funding. Following North Area Committee consideration and Officer recommendations this area project was unfortunately not approved. The key reasons for this were that the EIP programme was oversubscribed consequently the proposal rating didn't fall within our overall programme budget, it has been suggested the project would likely need considerable groundwork and would create a new long-term maintenance liability, though the principle is admirable the gain for investment is likely to be less than other biodiversity improvement projects.

How: remove old tarmac/asphalt area and plant up as a mini meadow or shrubbery
Why: two areas of Campkin Road verge and footpath (on north side between 42-46 and 48-54, just past the roundabout with Hawkins Road, and opposite Atkins Close) are currently covered in tarmac/asphalt and fronted by concrete bollards, so cannot be used as hard standing or for emergency access. It looks unsightly and this could be replanted with meadow grasses and flowers or shrubs to contribute to green corridoors, improve biodiversity and residents' enjoyment

As this site is on the route of the C1 bus service, if implemented this improvement will be seen by a large number of people as they pass by, widening the overall community benefit.

We should be striving to remove tarmac wherever possible and replacing with greenery if practicable.
Maintenance should also be considered.

While I agree that greening the area is a good idea, I don't agree with the suggestion of meadow grasses and scrubs. Meadow grasses look scrappy and get caught up with litter. Shrubs are not maintained and become overgrown. The new planting at Morello Place is like an art gallery exhibition a selection of discarded crisp and chocolate wrappers, receipts and cigarette butts. I think plain old grass is easy to maintain, greens the area and people will respect it more than more 'wild' planting that doesn't look tidy.
