Christs’ Pieces - Provision of places for unsightly bins improving environment

Provision of a series of 3 ‘inlet bays’ in the iron railings with hard standing, alongside the public path to the rear of numbers 70-88 King Street, for the commercial Eurobins that currently clutter the entrance to Milton’s Walk and the pathway behind Nos. 70-88 King Street. The proposition has been discussed with officers from Streets & Open Spaces, the Conservation team, and the Waste service. It has been agreed that the space involved is small, not publicly accessible and is not significant to the wider dense shrubbery between the path and tennis courts.

The current railings, which would be altered in like style, have also been identified as of no conservation value. It is accepted that the commercial bins do not have an alternative home. There is a consensus that this represents a pragmatic solution to a problem which has no other obvious answer.  

This will allow the bins to slot behind the railing line so they no longer hinder pedestrians along this route (the existing trees will be avoided). This solution has the potential to take into account all commercial bins.

The existing area is unattractive and unpleasant for pedestrians to walk through, especially at night. Relocating the bins will help transform the pathway into a more welcoming and accessible area, improving safety and views. Improving the appearance of this area will also help discourage antisocial behaviour. Project is a collaboration between local business owners, Cambridge City Council and ward councillor Tim Bick.
