Dear Daniel Megson,
We regret we are unable to consider this request as it doesn’t fit within the scope of the Environmental Improvement funding programme (EIP). The Council does not have the power to introduce such a ban. However, it does review its own assets to avoid waste wherever practicable. Unfortunately for the purposes of the EIP process we cannot accept the project idea and therefore will change the status of the project to rejected.
If you would like more details on why we have taken this course of action please post again against the project idea, and we will endeavour to get back to you.
Kind Regards
James Ogle
Enact a city wide ban on illuminating offices 'out of hours'
From "Environmental Improvement Programme 2023-24: New bidding round"
Go to the project

A number of buildings in the city remain illuminated well outside of office hours. Some buildings (Apples new HQ and the Car Dealerships near the Science Park) actively illuminate their frontage for no real benefit other than vanity.
Ban this. Doesn't save the council money, but won't cost anything major and will stop unnecessary electricity consumption.

I'd like to see this extended to any site that doesn't have a good reason to be illuminated. During the construction of Morello Place on Campkin Road, the internal lights were frequently left on after the contractors had left site for the day. Presumably it's the taxpayers who pick up the bills for this carelessness.

Wholeheartedly supported initiative that deserves wider debate citywide.

Totally. Shops too - eg on the Beehive centre.

Excellent proposal. Cambridge should lead the way in promoting sustainability and discouraging waste and excess. Many buildings on the Science Park are also illuminated late into the night.
