Improve and green the streetscape in Cowper Road

From "Environmental Improvement Programme (EIP) - 2022"

Go to the project

My proposal is that green verges be restored in the Lichfield Road end of Cowper Road. This stretch of the street has wide pavements and originally had grass verges with trees. Restoring the grass verges plus appropriate trees, such as silver birch, would greatly improve the streetscape and connect Cowper Road better with Lichfield Road, which has its original grass verges. This whole area of Cambridge acts as a 'green corridor' through the back gardens and treescape, but the unrelenting grey tarmac pavements (currently in poor repair) let the area down.

That's a great idea to add extra plants around the base of trees in the verges - many thanks for the suggestion. We should also not forget the mental health benefits of green areas in our streets, particularly post-pandemic.

Great idea to reverse the trend of more concrete and tarmac! It is vital that we ADD to our green space and not subtract, as basically happens year on year as we lose it to housing and car parking on front gardens. The addition of trees is likewise very important as part of the city's climate change mitigation. I would say when the grass is added there is a great opportunity to include a wildflower mix and bulbs around the trees to make the area even more biodiverse.
