Replacement of dead and removed Tree, Burleigh Street

From "Environmental Improvement Programme 2023-24: New bidding round"

Go to the project

Proposed budget

GBP 7,500

Description

Unfortunately, a dead tree was removed on Burleigh Street outside the British Red Cross shop. Although there is a single tree still in situ close by if this other tree were lost there would be no trees all the way along Burleigh Street this would be a considerable distance from East Road through to the bottom end of Fitzroy Street along the Road making this hard landscape an even harder landscape. To replant a tree in the same position would likely be easier than finding another location, although it would still require an engineered tree pit. Trees in such a heavily pedestrianised area offer many benefits including shade, shelter, greenery (wellbeing), softening of the hard built environment, biodiversity, nesting and roosting etc.

Of course this tree should be replaced - as was already *promised* to the public on the signage on the condemned/diseased/dead tree itself.
Seems like a good idea, but is the cost really £7500? That's an awful lot of money to replace a single tree
@Elizabeth Sheldrick Thank you for your comment. The bulk of the costs will go toward removing the old tree’s root system and installing a cellular structure to protect the soil. This will help ensure good tree health while minimising the potentail for root related damage. Of course if the funding is agreed and then not fully spent the unspent monies would return to the EIP funding pot
@Matthew Magrath is that really required if it is a straightforward replacement for a previous tree? Surely a standard £250 replacement tree, plus a little extra for a protective cage would be more appropriate. The number of projects that have proposed spending collosal amounts per single tree is hard to understand. The current proposal is to spend nearly 5% of the entire city budget on a single tree.

Matthew's comments are entirely worthy of attention and support by the city Council and all residents.
            Replacement tree please
Great idea. Replacement may well be in the works already but this would get my vote if not.

Replacement tree essential and as quickly as possible please.
                  Replacement seems sensible to me.
