Sell city Car Parks to fund extension of park and ride sites

From "Environmental Improvement Programme 2023-24: New bidding round"

Go to the project

Sell the existing city centre multi storey car parks (Park Street, Grafton East/West, Grand Arcade, Queen Anne's) to developers (in the condition they provide a single storey capacity public car park for blue badges /parent & child, which are returned to the council without cost).

Use the revenue to invest in the park and ride, starting with the investment in the rapid-to-deploy 'meccano - style' multi storey car parks being installed at the Park and Ride sites.

The reduction in parking in the city, combined with the increase in park and ride capacity, will help drivers from out of town switch to park and ride.

I like driving my car into town when I need to and expect to have suitable parking provided so no I don't support this proposal. Not everybody who has a physical impairment has a blue badge. This is typical anti-driver anti-resident proposal.
Hi Graham. I'm not anti-driver or anti-resident (I am anti-STZ) at all. However, the multi-storey car parks are rarely used by city residents, but visitors to the city. Those people are the ones that should be driven to use Park and Ride or the train, which will reduce the city traffic and make driving to places like the Beehive, supermarkets, and Addenbrookes easier for city and County residents (because the 'day trippers' are using the park and ride).

Efficient bus services to rail stations in combination with fair fares and strict schedules offer the most sustainable means of public transit to and from the city.
