Future of local government for Cambridge

  • Take part in our survey between 8 July and 3 September 2024.
  • Book a place at a public event on 23 July or 31 August 2024.

Cambridge has some of the most complex local government arrangements in the country. In addition to the services Cambridge City Council provides, Cambridgeshire County Council is responsible for other local government services, and Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority is responsible for co-ordinating some strategic functions such as transport.

In October 2023, city councillors passed a motion calling on the council to consider whether the current arrangements are the most appropriate form of governance for Cambridge.

We would like residents, businesses, and local communities to tell us their views about the current arrangements for local government for Cambridge:

  • do you support the current arrangements?
  • how well are they working?
  • do you think they can be improved?
  • should a unitary authority be considered (a single council responsible for the services currently provided by the city council and county council)?

No specific proposals for local government reorganisation are being put forward as part of this engagement exercise.

Your feedback will help inform whether any changes to current arrangements should be explored in more detail. A report summarising the views of the public and local partners will be published in autumn 2024, prior to a debate at the city council.

Take part by completing the survey by 11.59pm on 3 September, or by booking a place at one of the public events.
