Changes to taxi fares and licensing policy

Open for comments from Monday 4 November to Sunday 1 December 2024.

Cambridge City Council are consulting on how the Hackney Carriage (taxi) table of fares should increase each April, as well as potential changes to licensing policy.

Our annual consultation on taxi licensing fees and charges will launch on Monday 11 November.

How taxi tables of fares increase each April

In March 2022, the Environment and Community Scrutiny Committee decided that the main tariffs and subsequent distance and waiting time in the Hackney Carriage Tables of Fares would increase each April, in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI). This would be reviewed after three years.

We are now consulting on whether this should remain in place, or if there are other methods which could be used to amend the tables of fares every year.

Changes to licensing policy

The four proposed changes to the licensing policy could have an impact on the trade and members of the public.

Therefore, we are putting them forward for consultation before any decision is made.

The four proposed changes focus on whether:

  • wheelchair training should be made mandatory
  • drivers should carry out a daily check of their vehicle
  • private hire operator signs should be displayed on vehicles
  • the period that a DVLA licence has been held should be extended

Next steps

We will present a report regarding the table of fares to Environment and Community Scrutiny Committee on Thursday 16 January 2025.

A report concerning changes to licensing policy will be presented to Licensing Committee on Monday 20 January 2025. The outcome will be published on this page.
