Draft design code

Open for comments from Tuesday 13 February to Monday 11 March.
Thank you to everyone who has engaged with our project so far, to help develop a design code for existing northern suburban neighbourhoods in Cambridge.
We are now sharing the completed draft document.
Your input in phase 1 helped us understand your neighbourhood. In phase 2 we created the emerging five principles based on your priorities, and in phase 3 we set out specific detailed guidance on the design code.
Select the 'Take the survey' button to leave your feedback on the draft.
The design code
The code is structured around the five principles that are memorable and have a clear focus.
Each principle includes a range of technical design guidance showing how it can be delivered and how the principles can successfully work together to make attractive places.
The five principles of the design code are:
- Make space for nature
- Prioritise walking and cycling
- Thriving public spaces
- Enhance character
- Increase sustainability
The design code follows the National Model Design Code and is informed by the 10 characteristics of place as set out in the National Design Guide. The code includes a combination of mandatory requirements (musts) and recommendations (shoulds).
It will help guide investment, set a framework to coordinate, guide and assess development through the planning process. It will also enable and empower individuals and landowners to improve their homes and the surrounding landscape.
