Off-street parking charges 2023-24

Consultation open from 24 October 2022 to 14 November 2022.

The cost of parking at some of car parks could change from next April, for the first time in four years.

These proposals are part of the council’s strategy to reduce congestion, improve air quality and produce lower carbon emissions.

The overall net effect of the parking proposals would see charges rising below the underlying rate of inflation.

Background

The council is consulting on proposals for its off-street parking policy for 2023-24. The policy includes proposals that could boost Cambridge’s evening and night-time economy and support the owners of electric vehicles with no access to off road vehicle charging.

Under the proposals, parking between the hours of 6pm and 8am Mondays to Saturdays and 6pm on Saturdays to 10am on Sundays will be free at all the multi-storey car parks and four pay and display car parks.

The car parks to be included in the proposed scheme are:

  • Grafton East multi-storey
  • Grafton West multi-storey
  • Grand Arcade multi-storey
  • Queen Anne Terrace multi-storey
  • Adam and Eve pay and display
  • Castle Hill pay and display
  • Gwydir Street pay and display
  • Riverside pay and display

It's hoped that this will provide a boost for the city’s night-time economy, whilst allowing owners of electric vehicles to access electric charging points in council car parks without having to pay for parking.

To help reduce congestion in the city at peak times, improve air quality, and encourage drivers to use alternative means of transport (such as Park and Ride) rather than using their vehicle to come into the city centre, the proposed daytime parking rates at the council-owned car parks (listed above) will rise by an average 9%, after remaining frozen since 2019.

The proposed car park tariffs are shown below.
